Can clothes ever be fully recycled?

Can clothes ever be fully recycled?

By Ana Santi
27th February 2023

On the Swedish coast of the Baltic Sea, in the city of Sundsvall – home to the country’s pulp and paper industry – a team of scientists, chemists, entrepreneurs and textile manufacturers are celebrating a milestone birthday, under a banner which features the slogan “#SolutionsAreSexy”.

The world’s first commercial-scale textile recycling mill is a milestone in tackling fashion’s colossal waste problem.

The Swedish pulp producer Renewcell has just opened the world’s first commercial-scale, textile-to-textile chemical recycling pulp mill, after spending 10 years developing the technology.

While mechanical textiles-to-textiles recycling, which involves the manual shredding of clothes and pulling them apart into their fibres, has existed for centuries, Renewcell is the first commercial mill to use chemical recycling, allowing it to increase quality and scale production. With ambitions to recycle the equivalent of more than 1.4 billion T-shirts every year by 2030, the new plant marks the beginning of a significant shift in the fashion industry’s ability to recycle used clothing at scale.

“The linear model of fashion consumption is not sustainable,” says Renewcell chief executive Patrik Lundström. “We cant deplete Earths natural resources by pumping oil to make polyester, cut down trees to make viscose or grow cotton, and then use these fibres just once in a linear value chain ending in oceans, landfills or incinerators. We need to make fashion circular.” This means limiting fashion waste and pollution while also keeping garments in use and reuse for as long as possible by developing collection schemes or technologies to turn textiles into new raw materials.

How to Get Free Contactless Donation Pickups in Your Area

If it’s time to do a cleanout and get rid of your unwanted and unused stuff, you should know that you can get rid of it for free with contactless pickup from your home.

DonateStuff takes some of the headaches out of the donation process–and helps you do some good in your community. This post can help you understand more about how to donate to DonateStuff, the areas we serve, and our charity partners.

How Donation Works with DonateStuff

We know that cleaning out clutter is hard work. That’s why we make donating your unwanted stuff easy. Just three easy steps and you’ll declutter—and do some good in the process.

#1 Choose a Charity

We partner with local charities that are doing good in your area, and you can pick the one you’d like to benefit from your generosity.

#2 Schedule Your Pickup

Choose a date in our scheduling system to determine the best pickup day for you. On the scheduled date, we pickup your donation and leave a receipt that includes a tax deduction form for tax time.

#3 Put Out Your Donation

Leave your donation bags or boxes at your front door, and write DONATESTUFF on them all—and we’ll take it from there.

Benefits of Contactless Donation Pickup

Once you put out your donation, you don’t have to worry about it. It’s out of your life once our team takes it from your doorstep.

There’s also the benefit of reducing contact with people, particularly during times when we need to be careful about spreading the flu, COVID-19, and other illnesses. Contactless pickup is vital for those who are at high-risk and want to avoid interacting with people to protect their health.

Overall, contactless pickup from your front door just makes the process easier. It eliminates the need to pack up a car and run back and forth to a donation site. It’s simple—one less headache, right?

Donating Electronics/Games and Devices

Did You Know You Can Donate Gently Used Video Games and Electronics—with Free Pickup from Your Home?

Donating Electronics & Video Games

When you are preparing your next donation of old clothes, books, and household items, think about including old electronics and video games as well. These items often accumulate in closets and entertainment centers, but they can find a new life if you donate them to DonateStuff.

What Electronics & Video Games Can You Donate?

DonateStuff welcomes working stereos, radios, Wii, Xbox, Nintendo, Playstation, tablets, computers, laptops, monitors, DVD players, and small TVs.

Things to Consider When Donating Electronics & Video Games

Before you pack up those old games and electronics, there are a few things you should think about.

Check If It Works

Make sure that your old electronics are in good working condition. An old TV or gaming system that doesn’t work can’t be resold, so it’s better to put it in recycling (if possible) or in the trash. Check that your electronics turn on/off properly, and you have all the components needed to operate them, like cords and remote controls (if included), etc.

Remove Batteries

Even if your electronics have batteries that are still working, please remove them before packing them up into your donation box or bag.

Make Sure Game Disks Aren’t Damaged

If your donation includes games on disks, make sure they aren’t scratched or cracked. If your games are cartridges, check and make sure they work and aren’t damaged.

Don’t Forget to Clear Out Data

If you’re donating a tablet or laptop, clear out all the private data you have on the device. This typically requires that you restore the device to factory settings.

What Other Items Can You Donate to DonateStuff?

Electronics and video games are just one of the categories of items we accept at DonateStuff. As you clean out your home, consider some of the following items for donation:

Clothing

We accept all sizes of gently worn clothing, shoes, and accessories for ladies, men, children, and babies, including tops, bottoms, coats, undergarments, footwear, purses, hats, belts, and jewelry, plus suits and sport coats.

Housewares

We welcome mildly used bedding, blankets, drapes, curtains, rugs, towels, pillows, and sleeping bags. DonateStuff also accepts pots, pans, cups, glasses, dishware, silverware, tools, art, frames, and other home decor.

Toys & Sports Equipment

We accept clean, lightly used toys and children’s items like stuffed animals, dolls, action figures, board games, tricycles, bicycles, and sports equipment.

Small Furniture & Appliances

We are looking for easy-to-lift and transport nightstands, headboards, office chairs, small filing cabinets, and other lightweight furniture. We also take small (working) household appliances, including microwaves, blenders, toasters, and coffee makers.

Books

Help us find a new home for your gently used books of all genres, including hardcover and paperback editions.

Items Not Accepted

There are thousands of items throughout your home that you can donate to DonateStuff, but there are a few exceptions. We cannot take large furniture and appliances, like large dressers, mattresses, box springs, refrigerators, and stoves. We also don’t accept magazines, encyclopedia sets, and newspapers. When it comes to baby items, we can take clothing, toys, etc., but we don’t accept car seats and cribs.

Donation Drop Off vs. Donation Pickup

Donation Drop Off vs. Donation Pickup Services

If you have unused, unwanted items cluttering up your spaces, you probably have a good idea of how you could benefit from freeing up much-needed room in your home. But did you know that your donation could also help you do good for others? Making a positive impact in your local community with your donations is another benefit that might encourage you to declutter.

Before you get started on planning what to donate, do you know that not all donation services are created equal. What type of donation service is best-suited for your lifestyle? Learn more about the differences between donation drop off and donation pick up services to help guide your choice.

Donation Drop Off

Donation drop off is a popular choice for individuals looking to declutter. This method of donation entails loading donations into your vehicle and finding a donation drop-off location to take them to.

Finding a Donation Location

It’s not always easy to find a location to drop-off donations of unwanted or unneeded items. You may live in a rural area or simply not have a nearby location when you want to donate your household items, sports equipment, clothing and more. Also, what do you do when a charity or organization you want to donate to doesn’t have a location near you? An online search can help you find potential donation locations for your unwanted items.

Heavy Lifting Required

Some items are large, heavy and difficult to move, making it a challenging task for people who are older or not physically able to lift big items to transport them from their current location into a vehicle and to a donation drop-off location. Also note that if you’re dropping off your donation at a staffed location, you will need to get there during business hours, which can be difficult to fit into an already full schedule.

Who Does Your Donation Help?

Once you find a nearby donation drop-off location, you might wonder who will benefit from your donation. Having a say in who benefits from those donated items is important for the many donors who want to not only declutter their home, but also provide help to those in need. Before donating, do a quick web search of the organization to see who benefits from your donated items.

Donation Pick Up

Donation pick up offers a simple, hassle-free donation experience. Compared to donation drop off, donation pick up can be an appealing alternative when it comes to decluttering unwanted items, especially for individuals with busy schedules. Opt for a pick up service that allows you to pick the charity you wish to benefit to ensure you have a say in how your donated items do good.

Simplify Your Schedule

Donation pick up services give you the option of having your unwanted items picked up at the time that works best for you. For organizations such as donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud, you don’t even need to be physically present at the time of pick up. Simply place your unwanted items out for pick up prior to the scheduled time, check that they are clearly marked for pick up, and then go on with your day. A great solution for busy people!

More Places to Donate To

When you’re dropping off donated items, you’re restricted by geography and distance. There might only be so many options to choose from in your area for dropping off donated items. With donation pick up services, you can eliminate those barriers and donate to a much wider range of charities and organizations. Have a charity you love but it’s too far to drive to? With donation pickup services that allow you to choose your charity, you can schedule a donation pick up to benefit them from the convenience of your home.

Ease of Pick Up

Let’s face it: Many unwanted, unneeded items sitting around our homes are there because they’re a hassle to move. Too bulky, too many bags, too heavy, too hard to get a good grip on, etc. Skip the headache with convenient pickup services that turn your own front porch into a donation drop off site. Rather than having to haul small appliances, sports equipment or other unwanted, potentially hard-to-move items, scheduling a donation pick up means all you need to do is move those items a short distance and allow the pick-up service to take it from there.

donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud Pick Up

donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud offers a FREE and convenient donation pick-ups that not only help you free your home of clutter, but also help to make a difference for reputable local charities in the communities we serve. We offer simple, straightforward scheduling through our website and SMS text messaging, allowing you to set up your donation on your phone or mobile device within minutes.

Receive confirmation once your pickup is scheduled and a friendly reminder the day prior to your scheduled pickup so you’ll remember to place your donated items out for our drivers. Then, just ensure those items are clearly marked and left in a visible, accessible location and you’re all set. In no time at all, you’ll have turned stuff you don’t need into a good deed. Learn more and schedule your donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud pick up!

Best Places to Donate to

Best Places to Donate To

Donating unneeded items is a win for the donor, the organization that receives the donation and the person who receives the gently used items. But knowing the best place to donate isn’t easy; how can you ensure that your items will help those you want to support and that you’ll have a positive donation experience? Before donating to an organization, make sure you research them and understand how their donation process works and how your items are used.

Learn more about which type of donation service is best suited for your needs, from traditional drop offs at a fixed location to home pickups that offer maximum convenience when looking to declutter and rid your home of items you no longer need.

Where to Donate Clothing

Donating clothing is one of the most common ways to declutter a space and benefit worthy causes. You’ve probably seen large clothing donation dropoff boxes in parking lots or other high-traffic locations. These can be helpful if you know where they are and have one close to you, but if you live in a more rural area or one that doesn’t have many dropoff boxes, they aren’t the best option.

You can also donate gently used clothing to local organizations in your area. These are often smaller organizations that help a specific community, but they’re less likely to offer donation pickups, meaning you need to spend time driving to their location in order to donate.

Larger organizations that serve more than one area are another option when deciding where to donate clothing. With a larger service footprint and more resources, they offer the freedom to have your donation picked up from your home.

How to Donate Clothes

If you’re not sure how to donate clothing, three methods for getting rid of items you no longer need: in-person drop offs, dropoff boxes and donation pickups. A drop off ensures that your donated items are handled with care and get to their destination. However, donating at a specific location requires boxing or bagging your clothing, getting to that location during its hours of operation and hauling items to and from your car.

Donation dropoff boxes eliminate the need to visit a physical location during business hours, but come with other drawbacks. Donations may not be picked up the same day or even the same week and items placed inside these boxes aren’t as secure.

Donation pickup services combine the best aspects of these two options, ensuring your items are picked up in a secure manner without you having to take your donations anywhere. They also allow you to avoid the hassle of transporting items yourself.

Where to Donate Electronics

Generally, charities that take donations of electronics accept items that are clean and in good condition. These organizations typically require that devices must work, and nothing donated can be broken or missing parts. Because of the nature of the donated items and the fact that they can be damaged by rain, snow and cold, donating used electronics isn’t as easy as donating clothing.

When donating any type of electronic device, be sure to check with an organization to confirm whether or not they accept the type of items you have. Some accept smaller electronic devices, but not bigger ones, such as large flat-screen televisions.

Where to Donate Books

Many of the same organizations that accept clothing and electronics also accept donations of used books. In addition to local and national donation services, local thrift stores and libraries are options for getting rid of books you no longer need. These options come with some of the same hassles as donating other types of items, namely having to box up and transport donated items to a specific location during business hours. A donation pickup service eliminates these concerns and means the furthest you have to haul your used books is your porch.

The Benefits of Donating

Donating clothing, electronics, books and other unneeded items has many benefits in addition to decluttering your space. Opt for a donation service that allows you to choose which charitable organization your donation will support – including charities for veterans, students, animals or another cause that is close to your heart.

Goodwill & Other Donation Charities

Goodwill & Other Donation Charities

There are many donation charities on the market for those looking to declutter and organize their home or workplace while also benefiting people in need. Goodwill donations can be helpful in getting rid of items you no longer need and supporting causes like Habitat for Humanity is a good way to have a positive impact on your community. But what if you could benefit your community and do it with a few taps on a screen?

How Goodwill Benefits Charities

Goodwill Industries store revenues provide retail jobs by selling your unwanted clothes. However, when you donate items to Goodwill Industries, you don’t have the opportunity to decide which charity you want to support using proceeds from the sale of those items. You also have to lug your donation to your vehicle, spend time and gas driving to the nearest Goodwill donation center – during its hours of operation – and carry your items inside. While your donations do benefit good causes, donating isn’t as easy as it could be.

How DonateStuff Benefits Charities

donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud is a great alternative to other donation services. We partner with a wide range of local charities in the communities we serve and offer donors the chance to select the charity they want to support. Our family of charity partners includes organizations that assist veterans, pets, individuals with disabilities and kids. When you donate your clothing, small appliances, sports equipment, books and more, those items bring much-needed help and hope to those served by these great non-profit organizations.

Convenience of Pickup Donations

Cleaning out a space and getting rid of unneeded items can be a hassle. It’s why we so often put it off, knowing how much time and effort it will require to sort through everything stored in a spare room, garage or attic. But that’s only part of the battle; you still have to get rid of the items you no longer need once you’re done cleaning. Donating them is a great option, but with many donation services, you have to haul your items to a specific location during a specific time window in order to donate.

donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud is the superior choice for not only donating unneeded items, but doing so in the most convenient way possible. Rather than you having to drop off your donation, we pick it up for you. Using our website or simple text/SMS scheduling process, setting up your donation pickup is quick and hassle-free. Simply enter your zip code to confirm that we offer pickup service in your area, choose the local charity you want to support and then view available pickup dates and times.

Once you’ve chosen your day and time, submit your information and you’ll receive a confirmation message. You’ll also receive a reminder message prior to your pickup and on your pickup day, just set your items outside in a clearly visible location with a note marking them as donations. Our helpful drivers will take it from there, picking up your items and hauling them away. If you need to reschedule your pickup, just let us know and we’ll help you find a new date and time.

Donating Used Toys

Your How-to Guide on Donating Used Toys

If you’re getting bogged down with too much stuff and struggling with overflowing storage space, you aren’t alone. Cleaning out closets, the basement or the attic is the last thing most of us want to do. Plus, where do you get started? We suggest looking at how much storage space is being taken up by one of the usual suspects: Old toys.

Particularly as children grow, old toys often end up getting packed away and can take up a great deal of space. Some of those toys may be passed down as heirlooms or given to other children in your life, but if you’re ready to give your old toys a new home, this guide can help.

And remember, donating your gently used toys is a great way to make sure they aren’t taking up space in your home or a landfill—and the toys get to have a second life with a new child.

How to Prepare Your Donation

Once you sort out the toys you would like to keep, it’s time to clean and sanitize them. Some soft toys like stuffed animals can be run through a washing machine. It’s typically smart to put them into a garment bag to avoid damage. Otherwise, wipe them clean with soap and water, and do the same with any plastic toys.

Check the toys over to make sure they aren’t broken or missing parts, and remove old batteries. It’s also a good idea to see if there have been any recalls on the toys you donate.

Types of Toys DonateStuff Accepts

We accept a wide variety of gently used toys and children’s items including, but not limited to:

  • Stuff animals
  • Dolls and action figures
  • Toy cars and trains
  • Electronic games and systems
  • Board games
  • Coloring and activity books
  • Tricycles and bicycles
  • Outdoor and sports equipment
  • Building blocks and Legos

How Donation Works with DonateStuff

We know that cleaning out clutter is hard work. That’s why we make donating your unwanted toys easy. Just three easy steps and you’ll get rid of your old stuff—and do some good in the process.

#1 Choose a Charity

We partner with local charities that are doing good in your area, and you can pick the one you’d like to benefit from your generosity.

#2 Schedule Your Pickup

Choose a date in our scheduling system to determine the best pickup day for you. On the scheduled date, we pick up your donation and leave a receipt that includes a tax deduction form for tax time.

3 Reasons to Choose a Free Donation Pickup Service

As time goes on, we all accumulate stuff that we no longer need. Our unwanted stuff often creates clutter and takes up valuable space. The question is: What do you do with it? Do you have a garage sale? Throw it in the trash? Hall it to a donation site?

The easiest answer: Donate it to donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud, so you can turn your trash into someone’s treasure–and benefit a local charity in the process. If you’re ready to donate your unwanted items, here are a few reasons to choose a FREE pickup directly from your home with donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud.

Ease of Donating a Variety of Items

Especially when you’re doing a big clean out, having a pickup from your home can be a big timesaver. We accept a variety of items and then get them out of your hair–and into the hands of someone who needs them.

Choose the Charity You Benefit

When you schedule a pickup with donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud, you can choose a local charity to support. We’re proud to say that donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud and our affiliates have helped raise over $79,850,000 for our partner charities in the last 50 years.

5 Reasons You Should Donate Your Old Clothes

5 Reasons You Should Donate Your Old Clothes

Old clothes are taking up space in your drawers and closet, and you’re considering what to do about it. Do you bag them up, and throw them in the trash? Do you load up your car and make the journey to a donation site? Or do you find someone who can take and reuse your old clothing items?

Before you go any further, consider why donating your clothes to donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud is a great choice. Our FREE service makes it easy for you to donate your old clothes and do some good in the process.

1. Help the Environment

Did you know that 20 billion tons of clothes end up in landfills each year? These items end up emitting greenhouse gasses as they break down which contribute to climate change. Plus, manufacturing new clothing demands a lot of our natural resources, during a time when we’re trying to reduce our collective carbon footprint.

Donating your clothes is a better choice for the environment. Rather than rotting away in a landfill, your old clothing can be reused or recycled into something new. We’re happy to report that our donors help us keep 470,000 tons of clothing out of landfills each week.

2. Enjoy Mental Health Benefits

Even if having a positive impact on the environment isn’t your priority, there’s another important reason to consider cleaning out your unwanted clothing: You.

Many people feel stressed out when their environment is cluttered and disorganized. That’s why your mental health can benefit from cleaning out your old clothes. Believe it or not, tidying your drawers and closet can help you feel calmer and more in control of your life. Plus, taking small actions like cleaning out your closet can make you feel a sense of accomplishment.

3. Make Room for This Season’s Clothes

After you clean out your old clothes, you may find you need something new. The great news is that you’ve freed up room in your closet and drawers, so you have the space for new clothing. Or, if you need to switch out items in your closet based on the season, a good clean-out ensures you have adequate room to keep everything organized.

4. Receive a Tax Write Off

Not only is it FREE and easy to schedule a donation pick up from donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud – helping you do some good for yourself and the world – you can also get a deduction for your donation at tax time!

5. Feel Good About Doing Good

Donating your old clothes to donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud not only does you some good, but it also helps support local charities. donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud partners with charities in your area and you can choose which organization you want to benefit.

donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud Contactless Pickup

Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter Goes Virtual to Continue Its Mission

In response to COVID-19, we’ve decided to postpone all in-person events until further notice. However, the challenge of finding a new normal has only pushed us to adapt to fulfill our mission. Many of our programs and initiatives have gone digital in efforts to keep serving the Ohio lupus community.

Virtual Lupus Summits
The Virtual Lupus Summits are an opportunity to learn from lupus experts from major hospital systems across Ohio. This year’s summits will be hosted via live-streamed webinars. Our expert panels feature leading medical professionals who cover topics requested by local lupus patients and their families. We’re engaging the community in order to inspire patients to take charge and power up with education. Visit LupusGreaterOhio.org for updates on upcoming summits. You can also subscribe to our emails for the latest chapter news.

Other Digital Programs and Resources
Although we’re not meeting in person right now, there are still opportunities to stay educated and connect with other people with lupus. We offer call-in support groups, Web Talks for Young Lupians, Ask the Experts teleconferences, and so much more. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or looking for facts about COVID-19 and lupus, LupusGreaterOhio.org is a hub for resources and updated information. Check our events calendar for upcoming programs and call-in information for support groups. You can also sign up for group notifications, so you don’t miss a chance to call in.

We Are Here for You
When you donate to the LFA, GOC via donatestuffsandbox.kinsta.cloud, you help us continue our mission of improving the quality of life for those affected by lupus through programs of research, education, and advocacy. There is still a team of people working to serve you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.
